Seventeen year old Pagan Moore has seen souls her entire life. Once she realized the strangers she often saw walking through walls were not visible to anyone else, she started ignoring them. If she didn't let them know she could see them, then they left her alone. Until she stepped out of her car the first day of school and saw an incredibly sexy guy lounging on a picnic table, watching her with an amused smirk on his face. Problem is, she knows he's dead.
Not only does he not go away when she ignores him, but he does something none of the others have ever done. He speaks. Pagan is fascinated by the soul. What she doesn't realize is that her appointed time to die is drawing near and the wickedly beautiful soul she is falling in love with is not a soul at all.
He is Death and he's about to break all the rules.
OK, I know this book is old but I just read it and thought some of you might be interested in it. Although, that is IF you enjoy books on forbidden love and wanting what one cannot have.
So it’s the start of senior year and Pagan more has nothing special going on. She’s super smart and kind. She and her ex-boyfriend, who moved away ,won Prom king and queen during her junior year. Things are great with her two best friends: Wyatt dominates the basketball floor, and Miranda who happens to be Wyatt’s girlfriend. Pagan’s not the most popular girl in school but her position on the social latter is just fine with her.
There’s just one thing that isn’t fine with her: she sees souls. Pagan has been seeing Souls all her life and learned to ignore them. Her life is completely changed when she meets a soul who speaks to her on the first day of school. This startles Pagan because the souls have never spoken to her. He appears throughout the day when she’s alone and doesn’t do anything special but there is just something about him that draws her in.
Something else happens on the first day of school that flabbergasts Pagan: the schools quarterback and hottie, Leif, asks her for help in Speech but she refuses. When Pagan goes home that day, her mother tells her that Leif is dyslexia and desperately needs help. This discovery pushes her into tutoring Leif. So, they meet up almost everyday after school at Pagan’s house. Pagan slowly starts to realize that she judged Leif wrongly and develops feelings for him but isn’t she on how he feels about her.
While she and Leif are getting closer, she’s also getting a little attached to the soul whose name she doesn’t know. The only thing she really knows about him is that his sapphire eyes have powers on her that she doesn’t understand.
When Pagan writes a speech for Leif after he missed a session with her, she soon finds out that the reason he missed their appointment was to hang out with his ex-girlfriend, Kendra. The next morning Pagan takes the speech to Leif and overhears he and Kendra talking about her. But she completely misunderstands and decides to ditch school over heartbreak. The soul repeatedly begs Pagan to go back to school but she ignores him and gets in her car to go home. While at a stop sign, she is hit by a car that almost crushes her.
Pagan wakes up in the hospital to find that she’s alive and the soul is next to her hospital bed. Leif later visits her and tells her his reason for seeing Kendra. While recovering from her accident, Pagan is frequently visited by the soul who sings lullabies to her. She thinks school should be great now that she’s back and is dating the guy she really likes. However, things turn out the opposite: the soul is in school as Dank Walker, a famous band member, and everyone else can see him. Pagan knows there is something between she and Dank but doubts herself after seeing he and Kendra all over each other.
Pagan and Dank slowly falls for each other but can’t be together because of Dank’s secrets which he absolutely can not tell her. She’s still with Leif but doesn’t feel the sparks fly when they kiss. The more in love she and Dank falls the more torn apart he becomes and starts to draw away from her. when Dank realizes that things between he and Pagan have gone too far, he leaves and makes sure no when remembers him but Pagan. The rest of the book is Pagan dealing with extreme heartache and trying to find out more about Dank. She ends up being put into a home for disturbed girls here she finds more answers about her beloved. Does Pagan gets the answers she’s looking to find? Will Dank return to her? Or will she continue to date Leif? That’s for me to know and you to read and find out.
I got into Existence pretty quickly. Most authors will start of slow and give action when you’re fifty pages deep in the book but this one was different. Abbi Glines kept in interest from the first words.
The hero and heroine were entertaining. I’ve always enjoyed books where the hero keeps the heroine at arm’s length. I felt like I was in Pagan’s shoes through the entire book. I fell in love with Dank with every word he spoke. Pagan reminded me a lot of myself: quite. I had more in common with Pagan than in any of the other books I read and that kind of connection pushed Glines higher on my List of Favorites.
Leif was sweet and everything, however, I didn’t like him. There was something about his reaction towards her that was too sweet. Thought you might want to know that there’s a big cliff hanger at the end that’ll leave you wanting more. Ironic isn’t it? Usually the sweet quarterbacks are the heart stoppers but not for me. There’s more to that sweetness than meets the eye and I plan to find out.
