She could save the world –or destroy it.
Sixteen year old Evangeline“Evie” Greene leads a charmed life, until she begins experiencing horrifying hallucinations. When an apocalyptic event decimates her Louisiana hometown, Evie realizes her hallucinations were actually visions of the future – and they’re still happening. Fighting for her life and desperate for answers, she must turn to her wrong-side-of-the-bayou classmate: Jack Deveaux.
But she can’t do either alone.
With his mile-long rap sheet, wicked grin, and bad attitude, Jack is like no boy Evie has ever known. Even though he once scorned her and everything she represented, he agrees to protect Evie on her quest. She knows she can’t totally depend on Jack. If he ever cast that wicked grin her way, could she possibly resist him?
Who can Evie trust?
As Jack and Evie race to find the source of her visions, they meet others who have gotten the same call. An ancient prophesy is being played out, and Evie is not the only one with special powers. A group of twenty-two teens has been chosen to reenact the ultimate battle between good and evil. But it’s not always clear who is on which side…
Evangeline Greene is starting off a new school year with a summer of secrets to follow. She’s our typical popular girl, minus the B****y attitude, with the star football player as her boyfriend, a best friend with a rocking bod, and the golden blonde hair and perfect body to go with. Oh and add to that the fact she is a cheerleader! Her mother is a single parent, but hey, who needs a dad when you have one of the biggest mansions in town with enough money to make Paris Hilton look homeless? In order words, Evie is living the life…or so we thought.
The summer before school opened Evie was locked up in a mental institute, CLC, for teenagers and it will ruin her reputation if anyone finds out. But how can people not ask of her whereabouts when she disappeared for three months with no calls and texts?
Before she went to CLC, Evie had a series of gruesome nightmares about the apocalypse. Those dreams were so bad that it took doctors and specialists three months to “cure’ her of the “illness.” Have the nightmares stopped like the doctors hoped? Does the medication they put her on work? No, the nightmares haven’t stopped and the pills definitely do not work.
As everyone knows, with a new school year comes a new student. Jack Deveaux is one of the teenagers from the Cajun reservation who had to transfer to Evie’s school and she instantly despises him. Why you ask? Because Jack is dangerous, drinks all the time, and insults she and her friends in Cajun French; Evie speaks French fluently. Despite that, she can’t help but feel a little attraction towards him. Come on, who wouldn’t be attracted to a tall and muscular guy with dark hair, stormy grey eyes and stares at you 24/7?
Right before Evie’s dreams start to become reality she begins to get visions from a boy, Matthew, who warns her that the end is coming and she isn’t ready to face Death. Matthew sends her visions of other kids who are like her with special abilities, but Evie would rather believe she’s crazy than face the truth: the apocalypse is coming and she isn’t ready to face her enemies. Matthew also sends Evie visions of an evil witch with red hair and green eyes who looks so much like Evie. In the visions the witch kills without second thought and ruins everything that is alive. It turns out that every character in the visions – including Evie – is a card from the major Arcana in a deck of Tarot cards and Evie, like the witch in her visions, is the Empress.
When the Flash, the beginning of the End, came Evie lost everyone she knew. So you can imagine her shock when Jack one day shows up at her mansion demanding the truth from her. She kept a journal of drawings from her nightmares; Jack saw the drawings and noticed that every one of her drawings came true and, being a sucker for mysteries, he had to find out how she knew about the Flash. But Evie hadn’t figured out all of the mysteries to her visions and she figured the only person who could help her would be her grandmother. She promised to tell Jack the whole truth if he took her to North Carolina where her grandmother lived.
The world is a dangerous place since the Flash. There were only a few people who survived it. In order to get to North Carolina, Evie and Jack had to fight their way through numerous Bagman, zombie like creatures, attacks. They had to evade getting captured by Slavers and prevent Evie, being one of the few females left, from getting kidnapped by horny guys. Through all the ups and downs of their quest, Evie and Jack slowly fall for each other but not every romantic tale ends well.
Of all the YA books I have ever read, this one kept me on my toes the most. I knew from the start that Evie would fall for Jack but what I didn’t expect was his refusal to believe that she felt anything but hatred towards him. Sure, there were moments before and after the Flash when Evie looked at him like he was scum – that’s only because he acted as such. The only other time that Jack irked me was when they met Selena. She and Jack had everything in common; the fact she was gorgeous and rich really didn’t improve Evie’s feelings towards her. Evie knew that Selena was one of the major Arcana, what she couldn’t figure out was whether or not Selena knew. There were moments when it seemed like Selena knew about the cards but they were quick to pass.
I couldn’t see Selena as anything more than a lying B***h. The only reason she tolerated Evie was to get closer to Jack and when that didn’t work, she made him believe that Evie was in love with Matthew. When they rescued Matthew, Evie found out that he was autistic and didn’t tell the others – this was why she was so protective over him.
I enjoyed Evie; she is definitely on my Heroine list. She was stubborn, protective, and humorous; I like that in my heroines. I had to agree with Jack when he told her that the odds of her grandmother being alive were very slim, however, Evie had a feeling her grandmother was alive so they went on. She and Jack argued on all the time and I expected them to spontaneously start kissing in the middle of every argument but that never happened. Her ability to believe and keep going forward when the world seemed to be against her incredibly amazed me. There are so many other things that occur in this book but sadly I can’t tell without spoiling the surprise.
Kresley Cole joined my list of Favorite Authors when I read this book; it was that good. Every character irked me at some point but you get that in every book. I wish she’d given us more to hope for with Evie and Jacks happily ever after, but isn’t that what sequels are for? Poison Princess is one of my favorite books of 2012 and that’s saying a lot considering the fact that I am such a picky reader. The book had everything I look for in books: action, romance, drama, and a Bad*** hero. Hopefully, the second one comes out in the next year; I really am a sucker for mysteries myself. Poison Princess is a good read to start with if you’re looking for something that will keep you anxious and wanting more.
